Our town does not have sports fields available for Minor Soccer, Softball or Hardball, nor adult Slo-pitch, Flag Football or Soccer other than our local school playing fields. We do however, have well over one thousand participants that would love to be able to play and compete on recreation areas designated and built for their activities. During the past three years, through donations and fundraising, the 100 'tile House & District Sports Fields Committee has completed over three quarters of the construction of six new playing surfaces. The South Cariboo :arena Society became necessary when both the winter and summer users of the arena serving 140 Mile House and Area were informed that the existing and very tired, yet well used building, no longer met insurance prerequisites. It is unsafe to occupy and will not be insurable in Fall of 2003! This arena is used for a variety of our local events and activities; summer roller hockey and lacrosse, minor and adult winter hockey, figureskating and public skating, the hosting of out of tom entertainment, our local fall fair and trade shows, as well as our home town high school graduation ceremonies. Our new building is presently well on its way with 3 million dollars from the local taxpayers and their referendum support, however, a further one and a half million dollars needed to be raised by the established committee. They are nearing the end of this balance, and are continuing to work and fundraise through various channels. Recently, the two groups have joined together as the South Cariboo Recreation Committee to promote, support and maintain, physical activities in the Cariboo. As well as much needed amenities for our community, these sports and leisure resources will be a great benefit to the South Cariboo, as we will be able to host tournaments with out-of-town team participants. Our town, and the supporting outlaying areas, are limited in our fundraising resources, we can only ask so much of our local businesses and service groups. The South Cariboo Recreation Committee is presently organizing an elite Sports Night & Dinner Auction set for April 4, 2003, at the 108 (Mile Ranch) Best Western Golf & Country Club. As well as raffles and playful competitions, we are hoping to have a variety of sports, leisure and recreation packages, amongst various other fun items to be auctioned off during the evening. We are asking for any support you might be willing to contribute to our efforts. If you are able to donate an item, a package or "what-have-you", we would ensure that you would receive recognition at our auction, as well as through all advertising we do to promote this event. We have a vast group of residents that regularly travel to the Coast, the Island and the Okanagan, to partake in various vacation activities. I'm sure you realize the benefits from word-of-mouth promotion, especially from urban areas. We would really appreciate any support you can provide us and we thank you in advance for your prompt attention to this matter as April is drawing close. Should you have any questions, please do not hestitate to contact me during the day at (250) 395-4010 or in the evenings at (250) 395- 2152 (fax during the day). Any donation items can be forwarded to S. C Arena Society, Box 97, 100 Mile House, BC VOK 2E0 or sent on Greyhound to the 100 Mile Depot, collect - attn: Alexis Furer.
